Whilst printed on good quality coated paper the printing is uneven with much show-through and off-setting. The presentation inscription reads 'Hon Mrs Abercrombie Smith from John Laing, May 1900.' The book is dedicated to John Laing who served as both Member of the Legislative Assembly and later Member of Parliament for Fort Beaufort. Ainslie, an immigrant from Scotland and a resourceful person, describes a colourful and eventful life spent on the Frontier during a turbulent era engaged in commercial activities including brewing, milling and farming.
