Cartoonist Al Capp created 'Li'l Abner' - the satirical American comic strip that featured a clan of hillbillies from the impoverished mountain village of Dogpatch, USA. The comic strip ran for 43 years (1934-1977). Comic strips had typically dealt with urban life experiences in the North. When Capp introduced Li'l Abner, the first strip based on folks from the South, the response was huge -- it reached 60 million readers in over 900 American newspapers and 100 foreign papers. [Wiki].
