Quang Nam province, Vietnam, and its capital of Hoi An, was presently in the hands of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) but was contested for overall dominance by the Viet Cong (VC), the guerilla fighters who were supplied by the North Vietnamese Army (NVA). Assisting the ARVN in their struggle against the VC, a contingent of American Military Advisors, members of the Provincial Advisory Team (PAT) #1, were mainly responsible for the training of the ARVN troops of the 51st Regiment of the 1st ARVN Division. But the South Vietnamese troops had not been very proficient in their battles against the VC for control of the province. Thus, the American top command, MACV (Military Advisory Command, Vietnam), had doubts assigning an important mission to PAT#1. The mission was so secret that it was decided to keep it from the knowledge of the ARVNs until overall effectiveness of the advisor team could be determined. Thus, the American Colonel of PAT #1 found himself at odds with his Vietnamese counterpart, the Colonel of the 51st Regiment. Bot Colonels also had differences with their respective higher command on the responsibility for military operations as they prepared for an unforeseen battle that could be the turning point of war..
