Albrizzi, Girolomo: : Duces Austriae Priores

Copper engraving, 54.5 x 39 cms, black and white as issued, Latin text on verso.

The mark of Austria had been governed by the Babenburg family since the late tenth century. In 1156 Austria was raised to a Duchy, which is where this decorative genealogical table begins, with Duke Henry. The table closes with the extinction of the Babenburg house, when Duke Frederick was killed in battle by the Hungarians in 1246. A separate branch, top right, illustrates the re-assertion of imperial authority.
