He held the Hodge's Chair for Distinguished Teaching at the University of Tennessee and, 2016-2019, the Watkins Endowed Visiting Professor of Creative Writing at Murray State University. In 2003, Wier was inducted into the Fellowship of Southern Writers, along with Barry Hannah and Yusef Komunyakaa.
