Poetry in Greek with Latin commentary. Anacreon was born in 570 BC and was a Greek lyric poet, notable for his drinking songs and hymns. Later Greeks included him in the canonical list of nine lyric poets. Anacreon wrote all of his poetry in the ancient Ionic dialect. Like all early lyric poetry, it was composed to be sung or recited to the accompaniment of music, usually the lyre. Anacreon's verses were primarily in the form of monody, which means that they were to be performed by a single voice rather than by a chorus. Sappho was a Greek lyric poet said by some to have been born in Eressos, on the island of Lesbos, between 630 BCE and 612 BCE. Plato called Sappho the Tenth Muse, and the rest of the ancient critics agreed. She was one of the canonical nine lyric poets of archaic Greece, which meant that her works were studied by all those wishing to claim that they were properly educated. Alcaeus was a Greek lyric poet born in 620 BCE and was an older contemporary and an alleged lover of Sappho, with whom he may have exchanged poems. Alcaeus' experience in war and politics are reflected in his extant poetry, much of it military in nature. In addition to this, he also composed lively verses extolling revelry, gambling, friendship, and the rough life at sea.
