This is a historical play that centers around the characters of Mio Romagna and Miramne Esdras during the Sacco-Vanzetti case. Mio tries to prove the innocence of his father, Bartolomeo Vanzetti (changed to Bartolomeo Romagna in the play). Nicola Sacco (1891-1927) and Bartolomeo Vanzetti (1888-1927) were two Italian-American men and anarchists. Sacco and Vanzetti were at the center of a controversial case in which they were accused of murdering a guard and paymaster on April 15, 1920. The two were wrongfully tried, convicted, and executed for the alleged crimes. Many state that both Sacco and Vanzetti were innocent. However, other historians argue Sacco was guilty but Vanzetti was innocent. While there will likely never be an official conclusion of innocence or guilt, Sacco and Vanzetti were victims of an unfair trial that was heavily informed by anti-Italian, anti-immigration, and anti-anarchist views.
