Robert Hereward Britton, better known as
'Battler Britton' made his debut in
'Battler Britton,War Ace' (Thriller Comics Library No.160) in 1958.Within a year, his adventures were appearing in Thriller Picture Library (as it became known from issue number 163 onwards), and also found in the weekly Almagamated Press
story-paper,the 'Lion'.Many of the early
picture-strip stories were reprinted in Fleetway's Air Ace Picture Library in the 1960's, as were several new adventures, and they were reprinted yet again in a series of annual Battler Britton 'holiday specials' between 1978-82,with a further issue appearing in 1988.
'Battler Britton' rarely restricted his daring exploits to the air alone. In his time he had also served as a senior officer in the Peruvian Navy and a cavalry
commander in the French Foreign Legion, and such was his reputation that, following the outbreak of WWII,he was withdrawn from regular flying duties in order to undertake special tasks requiring
"skill and courage beyond the call of duty".
Such was the character's popularity that Fleetway issued 2 collectable annuals between 1960-61,each one containing a mixture of picture strip and text stories,
plus an assortment of 'Special Features' on aviation.A second collection of some of the war-time exploits of Wing-Commander
Robert Hereward Britton D.S.O.,D.F.C and Bar,Croix de Guerre. These annuals are uncommon and difficult to find with ease, particularly complete with dw/dj.
