Begins with a general physical overview, and then discusses the natives and Boscana's book; the Spanish advance up through Baja California to Alta California; the arrival of Americans including Fremont; Sutter and his settlement with Marshall finding gold and everyone under the influence of the 'fever' for gold; the author gives an accounting of overland and by sea gold seekers and what their life was like when they got there; how they formed a new state and the lack of women settlers.
