Anonymous : Chambers' Papers for the People, Volume IV

William and Robert Chambers, Edinburgh, Scotland, 1850

'Chambers's Papers for the People". New Series, published weekly - the work forms a Popular Cyclopedia of General Knowledge. Contents: 'The Bourbon family'; 'California'; 'The Black Pocket-Book - A Tale'; 'Fenelon'; 'Every-Day Life of the Greeks'; 'Lady Marjory St Just - An Autobiography'; 'Science of the Sunbeam'; and 'Sir Robert Peel'. "California", author unknown is 32 pages long and actually quite informative. Begins with a general physical overview, and then discusses the natives and Boscana's book; the Spanish advance up through Baja California to Alta California; the arrival of Americans including Fremont; Sutter and his settlement with Marshall finding gold and everyone under the influence of the 'fever' for gold; the author gives an accounting of overland and by sea gold seekers and what their life was like when they got there; how they formed a new state and the lack of women settlers. Seems to be drawn from many sources for information. Not in Kurtz's GOLD RUSH BIBLIOGRAPHY. Some minor repairs to the yellow cover binding, clean inside and outside.. Book. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: Soft cover
