The first separate edition (first printing) - never issued as a standalone story in the UK. Crown 8vo. 76pp. Brown cloth lettered in black at the upper board with a green-stamped compartmentalised border and a three-colour illustration. Tissue-protected colour frontispiece illustration. A touch of wear to the head of the backstrip, and just a little marking and chafing to the boards, but with much less flaking to the coloured upper board illustration than is usually found. A trace of spotting to two or three preliminary leaves. A very good copy. Conan Doyle's novella about 'the noble art' was first printed in the October-December 1899 issues of 'The Strand Magazine', and subsequently included in his collection 'The Green Flag and Other Stories of War and Sport' (1900).
