Autobiographical account of a woman pioneer, Eveline Brooks Auerbach (1859-1924). Eveline weaves together her own history with that of her mother, Fanny Brooks, and her father, Julius Brooks. Eveline tells the story of her parents' journey from the East Coast to California with documentation of what life was like in Salt Lake City (SLC), California, and Oregon. Much of Eveline's writings appear to focus on her family's experiences in SLC. Eveline describes the dynamics between Mormons and non-Mormons, how she and her family were treated by Mormons (the Brookses were of German-Jewish descent), Brigham Young, the Ute tribe, social life in the city, and the P. T. Barnum Circus visiting SLC. Other places and topics are addressed such as Portland, Oregon; the Pony Express; gambling saloons; and New York, where Eveline later retired.
