Harold Avery (1867–1943) was an English author of children's literature, who wrote school stories for both boys and girls.
Basil Severn and Dick Ferris, his school friend, bored in the holidays, receive permission to fish in the lake at Marlcot Hall,a deserted mansion in the neighbourhood. While fishing, they take it into their heads to look over the Hall, and find a curious steel spike which completely puzzles them. From then on they have no chance of being bore, for the holiday becomes filled to the brim with excitement and adventure.
Another uncommonly presentable item, this example has survived exceptionally well, particularly with the dw/dj's protection - particularly in respect to the book, and unusually, without the usual major discolouration and other imperfections usually encountered or expected in a children's book of this age.
