Henry War Beecher (1813-1887), a Congregationalist clergyman, social reformer and abolitionist who headed the Plymouth Church in Brooklyn, New York. Probably the most famous United State clergyman who believed in woman's suffrage; temperance; and evolution. He was one of the few people in favor of Chinese emigration. However he was not a major fan of working men's rights and favored the strike breakers. In the famous trial for adultery in 1875 Beecher was involved with a Mrs. Tilton, but was cleared by the court. It turned out he was quite the lady's man, though he had ten children by his wife that he did not care for. Fine clean copy.. Book. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good.
