Betty Friedan's 'The Feminine Mystique' is often credited with kicking off the "second wave" of feminism-- Friedan's treatise dealt with social issues such as workplace equality, birth control, abortion, and women's education; she tapped into middle-class American women's dissatisfaction with their lives, the routine of domestic life, chores and caring for children.
