London: Bloomsbury Auctions, 2005

Auction catalogue, very good condition (slight scuffing to front corners), pictorial card covers, 12" x 8", 74 pages, 609 lots, illustrated in colour and b/w, -----------Sale catalogue for Bloomsbury Auctions, Bloomsbury House, 24 Maddox Street, London W1S 1PP, on Thursday 14th July 2005------------"The first part of this sale is dedicated to the quintessential English summer pastime of Cricket including a collection of books from a true devotee of the game. This includes a wonderful array of items - from signed and inscribed cards to manuscripts, photographs, team sheets, scorecards, benefit brochures, cigarette cards, philatelic covers, menus, prints, paintings, ceramics and postcards. An almost complete run of Wisden's Cricketer's Almanack includes copies of many of the early years. A large proportion of the Cricket collection relates to Kent County Cricket Club and includes a run of "bluebooks" from 1883/84-1945. The latter part of the sale includes another private collection from one of Australia's most renowned anglers. This extensive collection not only includes books on angling but also fish and fishes with numerous colour-plate books. Highlights include Guillaume Rondelet's Libri de Piscibus Marinis (1554-55) est. £ 2000-3000, Marcus Bloch's Ichthyologie ou Histoire Naturelle des Poissons (1796) estimated at £3000-4000 and Thomas Barker's The Art of Angling (1653) estimated to realise £4000-5000.A large Olympic section is a timely reminder that the bidding for the 2012 games is at its height in London. First Day Covers, photographs, brochures and other ephemera all feature--RESULTS (not included in this catalogue): Highlights included an almost complete run of Wisden's Cricketer's Almanack. The early copies did especially well, for example 1867 and 1868 bound together as one volume made £5950 (estimate £1000-1500); the following lot consisted of four years 1870-73 bound as one which sold for £4046. As the sale was in the week before the first Test in the Ashes we expected to have a large Aussie contingency. However, they were outbid by a London collector who snapped up the Sheet of Signatures for the 1893 Australian Team which, although estimated to make £750-1000, reached a high of £ 4760."
