Neat,handwritten but, faded grey ink familial gift presentation inscrptn (parents to daughter) and date, Christmas 1948 (book was issued/published Oct,1948) to top edge of illustrated ffe,with recipient's neat,child-like handwritten blue ink UK address to reverse of front free endpaper (ffe).Publisher's original blue cloth boards with bright,crisp,blocked black ink printed titles to spine/backstrip,author's facsimile signature to front board and clean 3-colour block (blue,b+w) immaculate pictorial illustrated endasaper; with negligible shelf-wear to edges,corners and the spine/backstrip - book with a slight lean/roll.Head of spine/ backstrip with some sunning/fading extending to just below the main title,due to absence of that portion of dw/dj; and similar sunning/fading,but to a much lesser degree and coverage - restricted to a very narrow strip - below the publisher's printed name at foot of the spine/ backstrip.The sunning/fading continues in an approx 1/2" (at it's widest point) wide band across both the top+lower edges of the upper board.Fading to top edge of bd,again due to absence of a portion of the dw/dj.Top edge minimally aged and no heavy foxing or spotting - virtually none,fore-edges slightly more aged/ toned and with some usual,but slight thumbing/ grubbing; contents bright,tight and generally clean - some miniscule and minor foxing,but solid and sound - one intentional(?) dog-ear,top corner crease pp107/8,no other reading creases to any other pages' corners,otherwise appears unread (?) - apart from my own collation.UK,slim 12mo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,7-192pp [paginated] includes 19 chapters,8 full-page colour illustrations in two sets of 3-colour block (red+b/w and blue+b/w - 4pp of each colour block),8 full-page b/w line illus and profuse part-page b/w line illustrations - all by Eileen Soper,throughout the text and the book; plus [unpaginated] half-title with publisher's 'FIVES' titles (7 - includes this title) checklist to it's reverse,a title page with publisher's stated edn+date - 'First printed, August 1948.' to reverse,and a contents list/ table. Eileen is most remembered for her collaboration with Enid Blyton,notably for the 'Famous Five' series (1942-1963) - though she also published her own children's books in the 1940s,and then working mainly on her wildlife illustrations from the 1950s onwards,based on the wildlife in her garden. Enid Blyton's books have sold over 500 million copies and have been translated into other languages more often than any other children's author.She wrote over 600 books and hundreds of short stories, including favourites such as 'The Famous Five','The Secret Seven','The Magic Faraway Tree','Malory Towers' and 'Noddy'. Born in London in 1897,Enid lived much of her life in Buckinghamshire and adored dogs,gardening and the countryside.She died in 1968 but remains one of the world's best-loved storytellers.
