UK,slim 12mo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.[Originally published July,1945.Reverse of title page states 'THIS BOOK IS PRODUCED IN COMPLETE CONFORMITY WITH THE AUTHORISED ECONOMY STANDARDS.] VG++/G.Owner's child-like,blue ink handwritten name+address at top of the reverse of the front free endpaper along with a blue ink familial (parents to daughter) dedication, inscription and date [Christmas 1945] and no price-clip (6/- net.) to dw/dj.Colour,pictorial artwork by Eileen Soper, illustrated front panel of dw/dj with white-outlined blue ink lettering with contemporary brown adhesive paper repairs internally to virtually whole of the dw/dj - top +bottom edges, front inner flap fold,spine/ backstrip, with only the rear inner flap fold unrepaired - apart from width of adhesive repair to it's top+bottom edges. Those repairs causing the front panel,spine/backstrip and rear panel all to experience horizontal wrinkling/ crinkling.Further slight chipping, rubbing and creasing to top+bottom edges, some with minimal loss.Blue+black lettering to a white but grubbed spine/backstrip and a small loss at foot of same, affecting the publisher's name with only 'Hodder' visible. Both exterior vertical edges of dw/dj's inner flaps with chipping, tiny tears, rubbing and creasing, rear panel lightly grubbed. A blue ink underscored number 23 to top corner of front, inner flap of dw/dj.Top+fore-edges both slightly toned with sporadic foxing/spotting; contents remarkably bright, crisp, and clean with a very few page-edge smudges - solid and sound - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - appears unread, apart from my own collation. Internally an exceptional copy/ example.Bright, crisp, clean with very minor speckling, publisher's original, fairly sharp-cornered,pale cornflower-blue cloth boards with black ink printed titles to front+spine/backstrip and clean 3-colour block (bluey-green,black and white) pictorial illustrated endpapers.UK,slim 12mo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,7-192pp [paginated] includes 22 chapters,8 pages of 2 sets of 3-colour block (blue, black and white and red, black and white respectively,full-page illustrations - 4 of each colour,8 full page b/w line illustrations, profuse part-page b/w line illustrations interspersed throughout the text and the book - all by Eileen Soper; plus [unpaginated] b/w vignette illustration to half-title page with author's other titles checklist to it's reverse,a colour pictorial frntis, title page, and contents list/table with story's precis to it's reverse. A highly collected and prolific children's book author/illustrator,and an unusual item/ephemera in Blyton's bold style and will be an important and welcome addition to the canon.Wartime issues/ editions are notoriously and particularly scarce and as such, are highly sought after.Uncommon example with a dw/dj in a book of its age and given the period of production,i.e. 1942-1947 - with wartime paper-rationing,and the poor quality of paper generally used and survival rates of air-raids on domestic and commercial properties i.e publishers+printers.Any dw/dj would have been of substandard quality and fragility and be prone to subsequent disintegration - as testified by this example - and usually discarded,or be reverse printed - possibly coming from an entirely different book/title.
