UK,slim 12mo HB+protected dw/dj,1st edn. [True UK first edn with the 'THIS BOOK IS PRODUCED IN COMPLETE CONFORMITY WITH THE AUTHORIZED ECONOMY STANDARDS' advice/ notification and stated 'First published in 1947' to recto of title page.Uncommon example in a book of its age and given the period of production,i.e. 1942-1947 - with wartime paper-rationing,and the poor quality of paper generally used and survival rates of air-raids on domestic and commercial properties i.e publishers+ printers.Any dw/dj would have been of substandard quality and fragility and be prone to subsequent disintegration and usually discarded,or be reverse printed - possibly coming from an entirely different book/title.Stanley Lloyd illustrated all six titles in the series.) VG++/POOR.Neat, handwritten inked owner's name+address to recto of front free endpaper.Dw/dj heavily creased, chipped, rubbed and torn with loss and with aged/browned heavily sellotaped repaired/strengthened both internally+ externally to dw/dj's inner flaps' folds/ creases, the top front edge and brown adhesive paper tape internally to spine. Really poor, only included for completeness.Remarkably bright, crisp and clean, publisher's original vibrant orange (?) cloth bds with bright, crisp, stamped black ink printed vignette and lettering which include author's facsimile signature to front bd and with stamped, printed black ink lettering to spine/backstrip and black /grey illustration by Richard Cribb,to cream eps and pastedowns. Some sellotape 'ghost' residue from sellotaped dw/dj to fore-edges of both the front pastedown and front free endpaper and the rear fore-edge of rear pastedown respectively - but no noticeable foxing/spotting.Front board/ cover with a tiny margin of minimal bleaching/sunning/fading to it's top edge, head of spine and fore-edge and corners. All corners inevitably but minisculely bumped with negligible fraying.Top edges aged/toned and lightly toned without foxing/spotting,fore-edges also aged/toned but to a lesser degree,so therefore slightly brighter and also without foxing; contents bright, tight and clean, solid and sound.Text body bright and generally clean with negligible blemishes and no foxing/ spotting - near pristine - one dog-ear reading crease to pp53/4 top corner - otherwise appears unread apart from my own collation.UK,slim 12mo HB+dw/dj,1st edn, vpp+1-151pp [paginated] includes contents list/table,22 (XXII) chapters,8 full-page b/w illustrations by Stanley Lloyd interspersed throughout the text and the book, plus [unpaginated] half-title page with b/w illustrated frntis to it's recto, title page and publisher advert to rear. Described hard but fairly and honestly - an exceptional example - dw/dj obviously excepted - book nowhere as detracting as it reads or sounds!
The 2nd of the 6 published 'Malory Towers' books/series (1946-51).Wartime issues/editions are notoriously and particularly scarce and this makes an important and welcome addition to the Blyton/ Malory Towers schoolgirls story canon for all Blyton/Schoolgirl fiction collectors/officianados.
Here is another first-class school story by Enid Blyton. It is the second book about Malory Towers, and this time,Darrell,Sally, Gwendoline,Mary-Lou,and the girls we knew so well in the first book, have gone up to the second form. The fun they have, the tricks they play, the rows they get into, work, games, exams, all are here just as they are in real life.
It is an exciting, vivid, readable tale of boarding-school life, full of humour and character. We see Mam'zelle Dupont scolding the girls,we join Alicia in playing that terrible trick with the invisible chalk, we watch the foolish Gwendoline and the silly Daphne getting into inevitable trouble, and again we look on whilst Darrell loses her temper! It is all so real that we feel that somewhere these girls and their mistresses really do exist and live out their daily lives just as they do in the book.
The first book of the series had a tremendous welcome. This one,and the ones to come, will be as popular a school series as Enid Blyton's St. Clare books - and that is saying a good deal.
Since April 2013 and again in March 2015, and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too!
