Uncommon example with a dw/dj in a book of its age and given the period of production,i.e. 1942-1947 - with wartime paper-rationing, and the poor quality of paper generally used and survival rates of air-raids on domestic and commercial properties i.e publishers+printers.Any dw/dj would have been of substandard quality and prone to subsequent disintegration and usually discarded,or be reverse printed - possibly coming from an entirely different book/title.
A very scarce copy, particularly with an exceptional dw/dj as this.
A new Enid Blyton book is always an event and is welcomed eagerly by thousands of children to whom the name of Enid Blyton spells fun and laughter, magic and excitement.
Here is another new one 'The Little White Duck',which will be read with delight. This book is full of the kind of stories children like best - stories of children, animals, toys and pixies - told in the well-loved Enid Blyton way.
It is well illustrated in colour, and the pictures,by Eileen Soper, interpret each story in exactly the right way.
Eileen [Alice] Soper (b. 1905 - d.1990) Daughter of George Soper under whom she studied and was artistically trained. She first exhibited at the Royal Academy at the early age of 15.She derived much of her subject matter from her father's garden,in the house her father built and which along with her sister she lived and inherited, the greater part of her life. She and her sister have maintained and preserved it as a nature sanctuary.A painter of wildlife, children, portraits and miniatures, and engraver. She was a founder member of the Society of Wildlife Artists, and elected to the RMS (Royal Society of Miniature Painters,Sculptors and Gravers) in 1972.
Eileen is most remembered for her collaboration with Enid Blyton, notably for the 'Famous Five' series (1942-1963) - though she also published her own children's books in the 1940s,and then working mainly on her wildlife illustrations from the 1950s onwards, based on the wildlife in her garden.
Enid Blyton's books have sold over 500 million copies and have been translated into other languages more often than any other children's author. She wrote over 600 books and hundreds of short stories, including favourites such as 'The Famous Five','The Secret Seven','The Magic Faraway Tree','Malory Towers' and 'Noddy'. Born in London in 1897,Enid lived much of her life in Buckinghamshire and adored dogs, gardening and the countryside. She died in 1968 but remains one of the world's best-loved storytellers.
