Neat,blue inked familial gift presentation inscrptn and date (13th April, 1946) to front free endpaper and further owner (recipient) childish handwritten name/address to top of half-title page.Negligible shelf-wear to edges and generally clean with the usual minimal soiling/grubbing seen when lacking a dw/dj for protection,publisher's original cream cloth boards with colour (black+green) pictorial decorated front+spine with bright,crisp,blocked black+green letters to same,all corners minimally bumped,rubbed and with some fraying and plain,generally clean,white endpapers - inscrptn excepted.Top edges minimally dust-soiled and minimally speckled with blemishes, fore-edges with lightest hint of ageing - very considerably much less than is usual/normal or encountered - so bright and clean with no foxing/spotting; contents bright,tight,clean, solid and sound - minimal foxing/blemisheing to text body and no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips,appears unread - apart from my own collation.UK,8vo HB minus dw/dj,1st edn, v-viiipp+1-318pp [paginated] includes contents list/table,31 chapters,profuse part-page and full-page b/w line illustrations by Stuart Tresilian throughout the text and the book,plus [unpaginated] half-title page with b/w line illustrated frntis to its verso and b/w vignette illustrated title page - both pages minimally foxed/spotted. Author's 2nd title in this series of 8 adventures and quite scarce as a true UK,HB 1st edn - particularly with a dw/dj. Uncommon example with a dw/dj in a book of its age and given the period of production,i.e. 1942-1947 - with wartime paper-rationing,and the poor quality of paper generally used and survival rates of air-raids on domestic and commercial properties i.e publishers+printers. Any dw/dj would have been of substandard quality and fragility and be prone to subsequent disintegration and usually discarded,or be reverse printed - possibly coming from an entirely different book/title. An important and welcome addition to the Enid Blyton adventure story canon for all Blyton fiction collectors/officianados.
