Brown 3/4 leather binding with green, marbled paper-covered, boards. 3 3/4" x 5 1/2." 176 pages, complete. Two black-and-white illustrations, complete. One illustration is a frontispiece portrait of the author. The other illustration constitutes an illustrated alternate title page. Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning. Binding is tight. Covers are clean and intact overall but have pronounced rubbing on the front, back, and spine, moderate wear to the corners and edges, and a few bumps along the edges. Part of the spine label, which reads, "Poems & Essays," is also chipped. A Very Good copy. Jane Bowdler (1743-1784) was an English author. Her life was tragically cut short by ongoing illness, but she wrote a number of poems and essays that garnered her much respect and recognition. This book, as noted by the title, is a collection of her poems and essays that include fiction and nonfiction and variety of subjects that mostly appear to be philosophical or religious in nature. Titles under "Poems": "Ode to Hope," "Elegy on the Death of Mr. Garrick," "A Ballad," "Love, for the Vase of the Batheaston Villa," "To Miss--, then two Years old," "Louisa; a Tale," "Envy; a Fragment," and "On the New Year."
