The Bibliographical Society of the University of Virginia (UVA) was founded in 1947 as a society that strove to foster interest in books, manuscripts, maps, printing, bibliography, and the like. In its early years, the society was led by one of UVA's faculty members, Fredson Bowers. The Bibliographical Society of UVA published the first volume of its annual journal, Papers of the Bibliographical Society, in 1948. The publication was later named, Studies in Bibliography, beginning with Volume II in 1949. The journal encompassed a diverse range of topics that related to bibliographical study.
