Prospect of the city of Buda from the east side of the Danube, with the fortress city of Pest linked by a pontoon bridge. The Turkish occupation of the city (1541-1686) is referenced by the two large figures bottom right, representing the local pasha and his bodyguard who wears feathers pierced through his scalp. The view was drawn by Georg Hoefnagel, the most important contributor to the 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum', the first series of printed townplans of the world.
