The book begins with prehistoric timekeeping and moves forward chronologically through the centuries to modern times (circa 1919). Many timekeeping devices are discussed such as the prehistoric sundial, later sundials, water clocks (clepsydra), portable clocks (including the Nuremberg "eggs"), pendulum clocks, grandfather clocks, and modern watches. The plates are an expressive and charming accompaniment to the text. They feature the work of Lejaren a Hiller (1880-1969; nee John Arthur Hiller), a photographer best-known for his dramatic tableaux vivants, staged scenes in which actual human models posed in historical or theatrical settings. The plates in this book are a fine sampling of Hiller's style of photography with their historical subject matter, use of soft-focus lens, and presence of chiaroscuro (lighting effect that emphasizes light and shadow). The original photos from which the plates were taken may have been hand-painted, which was also representative of Hiller's unique approach to photography.. Illustr.: Hiller, Lejaren a. Book.
