Henry Irving (1838-1905) was the most famous actor during the last half of the 19th century. He was knighted in 1895, the first actor to be knighted. He gained his greatest fame at the Lyceum in London in which he acted and managed the theatre. In 1878 he added Ellen Terry to the acting group and produced some of the most famous Shakespearean plays. In 1905 he died on stage from a stroke playing Becket.
