Overall, Very Good. The Ordinance of 1787 established the first colony of the United States, the Territory of the United States Northwest of the River Ohio. From this territory, five states (and part of a sixth - Minnesota east of the Mississippi River) were eventually admitted into the Union on equal footing with the original states. As the United States moved on to the Pacific and a new northwest developed, the region north of Ohio came to be known as the Old Northwest. This Pulitzer Prize in History (1950) work presents an outline of the history of the Old Northwest from 1815, the beginning of the "Great Migration," to 1840, the date which roughly marks the end of the pioneer period. Anyone interested in the history of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota can't afford to be without this two-volume work.
