BUSH, Prescott. TYPED LETTER, SIGNED. United States Senate letterhead stationery, 10 1/2 x 8 in., dated May 25, 1954. Addressed to Robert Dudley French, Master of Jonathan Edwards College at Yale University, the letter expresses Bush's personal concern about the ongoing McCarthy-Army hearings and explains his rather limited public response to them. "I would have no hesitancy in answering the questions propounded in your letter... in my opinion, it is in the public interest that members of the Senate withhold comments on the merits of the controversy until they (the hearings) have been concluded. Believe me, my former teacher and old friend, nothing has more seriously disturbed me since I came to the Senate... For the present, the only action which appears open to me is to advocate the adoption of uniform rules which would give the Senate a greater measure of control over investigations than it has had in the past. This I have done..." The body of the letter is twenty-four lines and signed Pres twice at the end; once below a typed closing, and the second time below the hand-written postscript: "Please read my Cheshire speech" To illustrate the advocacy he mentions in his letter, Bush enclosed a press release of a speech he delivered in Cheshire, CT on May 15th and a tear sheet from the Congressional Record of May 24th. The letter and the enclosures are clean and neatly creased twice (for mailing). The Congressional Record is printed on paper of poor quality and is quite browned, with some transfer to the letter and the tear sheet.
