Benjamin Franklin Butler (b. 1795, d. 1858) was Attorney General of the United States, 1833-38 and Secretary of War, 1836-37) under President Andrew Jackson. His rapid rise to influence earlier included a partnership in the law office of Martin Van Buren in Albany as well as a number of judicial and reelected positions. Later in his career he also received judicial appointments from Presidents Van Buren and James Polk. In this document ("Benjamin F. Butler vs. Anahiah Payne") Butler files a complaint before the New York Supreme Court against Payne to collect not only on a $345 promissory note owed to him by Payne but also on other debts Payne owes him totaling $800.
