[75] pages of newspaper cuttings, full black leather rubbed along the edges, titled gilt on upper cover
Contains a number of letters by an unknown author, published in an Edinburgh newspaper and neatly pasted into this book which was obviously specially made for the purpose. The letters deal with the journey to and from England aboard the Dunottar Castle and the author's stay in and around Cape Town. He seems to have been well connected as he is invited to a ball at Government House, meets prominent local politicians, journeys to Stellenbosch to call on an ‘ex-minister of the Cape’ on his farm and visits most of the places of interest including the government farm at Groot Constantia and Hout Bay. Whilst at the Cape he stayed mostly at the Grand Hotel in Diep River which appears to have been a very comfortable establishment.
