8vo. 1794-1806. A bound volume of 74 stipple UNCOLOURED engraved plates each measuring 21x13cms [hand numbered in pencil]. Each plate bordered by a single line with the artist imprint to the outer lower edge. The printers imprint and date the lower edge of the plate mark. Original half calf binding with marbled boards. Oval engravings of head and shoulder, many with a smaller rectangle shaped print at the foot of the portrait. MOST CRISP AND CLEAN BUT SOME FOXED OR STAINED. Included is the very rare portraint of 'Tchien- Lung Emperor of China who gave Audience to the British Embassey in 1793' with a small rectanle scene of the meeting in a large domed tent. John Chapman was one of the most gifted engravers of the late eighteenth century with exaMples of his work in major national collections including the National Portrrait Gallery.
