A beautiful, original hand-colored engraving that shows a view of the Old Port of Marseille. People are shown on the shore and aboard various ships and boats. A few ships and the city of Marseille are shown a little off in the distance. No date, circa 1740-1770. Paper measures 17" x 11 3/4"; printed area measures 16 1/2" x 10." In the top margin is "No. 174" and the title printed backward. This print is a "vue d'optique," which were very popular in the latter half of the eighteenth century and first half of the nineteenth century. Vue d'optique prints emphasized perspective in their compositions and produced an illusion of depth when viewed through a zograscope. Below the printed area is the title and the following address of the publisher in French: "A Paris chez J. Chereau, rue St. Jacques au dessus de la Fontaine St. Severin aux 2 Colonnes No. 257." Jacques Chereau (1688-1776) was a French engraver, printmaker, and publisher of optical prints. Print is very clean and intact with vibrant colors. Thin strips on either corner of the bottom margin appear to be cut out. Very minimal age-toning.. Print. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good.
