Buy this book on-line CHRISTOPHER LOGUE : New Numbers. Poems. (INSCRIBED, WITH ALS)Jonathan Cape, London, 1969
The paperback issue of the first edition, issued simultaneously with the casebound edition. This copy inscribed by the author along the leading edge of the first leaf and dated the month after publication: "To Philip, Major Latter, Oakes, from Christopher, Capt. Latter, Logue July '69". Small 8vo. 76pp. Orange publisher-laminated card wrappers, a little faded at the spine. Very good. Laid-in is a hand-written letter from the author on his thin Denbigh Close notepaper, addressed to the same recipient: "Dear Philip - if you feel in the mood I would like us to struggle and produce a really good piece - a very truthful and accurate piece, without [indecipherable] throwaways. There is really quite a lot to be said: bear with me in this - Major Latter is alive in BOTH of us, you know - though you gave him life in me. Christopher". 1,000 copies of this paperback issue were printed (alongside 3,000 casebound copies). Ramsden A27b. Philip Oakes was a British journalist, novelist and poet - a minor figure in The Movement. 'Major Latter' is a reference to Oakes' poem 'The Ballad of Major Latter', which appeared in his second collection of poems, 'In the Affirmative' (1968) and recounts the (allegedly true) story of a Major in the Indian Army who took to the mountains to hunt unicorns. Logue and Oakes were quite close friends, but despite Logue's appeal I can find no trace of an eventual collaboration.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good.
