Circa 1900, sized 6 x 9.5 inches, on heavy gloss paper, generally very clean and bright. The author, b. Ixonia, Jefferson County, Wisconsin, June 11, 1840, was a lawyer, newspaperman, and politician of Wisconsin. He attended the University of Wisconsin and during the Civil War served in the 1st Wisconsin Cavalry, 1861 - 1863. Although trained in law and admitted to the Wisconsin bar in 1865, he made newspaper work his career. He was co-publisher of the Watertown Republican from 1868 - 1870, the Beloit Free Press, 1870, and the Beloit Journal, 1870 - 1871. In 1871 he became editor and publisher of the Whitewater Register, serving as editor until 1902 and as publisher until his death. Influential in Republican party politics, he was state assemblyman, 1878 - 1879, and chairman of the State Central Committee. He was president of the Wisconsin Editorial Association from 1884 - 1885, was a regent of the State Board of Normal Schools, 1896 - 1898, and was deputy commander of the Wisconsin G.A.R.. Print.
