CURIE, Pierre : OEUVRES DE PIERRE CURIE

CURIE, Pierre. OEUVRES DE PIERRE CURIE. Publiees par les soins de la Societe Francaise de Physique. Paris: Guthier-Villars, 1908. First edition. Frontispiece portrait, two plates, and text illustrations. Octavo. xxii,621 pp. Text is quite clean overall and complete; eventhough the bookblock is very lightly foxed, just at the fore-edge and on a few final pages, and is split into two parts. There is a tiny puncture, not really noticeable, through the initial pages until p. 12. Original printed paper wrappers are present. However, the top wrap is detached and edge-chipped, with a small sticker affixed to one corner, and the spine is heavily chipped. It is offered as is. In 1896, at the suggestion of Henri Bequerel, Pierre Curie and Marie Curie, his wife, began to intensively examine the peculiarly powerful radioactive properties of pitchblende. In a series of papers beginning in 1897 they reported their progress in isolating new substances they called polonium and radium. In 1903 Pierre and Marie Curie shared the Noble Prize for Physics with Henri Bequerel. (PMM 394b).
