Seven black and white plates, complete. Embossed seal of E. W. Abbey, a book dealer, on front free endpaper. Pages and covers are very clean and intact. Binding is tight. Top edge of the spine has some chipping. Some of the pages have slight foxing. This book is a satire on American high society during the 1850s. Although the Bibliography of American Literature (BAL) calls this "State B" (no priority), it gives every indication that this is the earliest issue. Cited from the Bibliography of American Literature (BAL), no. 4267: "Noted in the following states. The sequence is not known: A: Top edges gilt. 10 plates inserted. B: Top edges gilt. 7 plates inserted. C: Top edges plain. 10 plates inserted. D: Top edges plain. 7 plates inserted. Some significance may attach to the fact that the Fifth Thousand (1854); the Sixth Thousand (1854); and the Dix, Edwards reprint of 1856, have ten plates each. Listed as a November publication NLG Dec. 15, 1853. Distributed in London by Sampson Low whose imported edition was listed in PC Feb. 1, 1854. The Beeton (London) edition listed PC Dec. 18, 1865.".
