Letter handwritten in black ink on beige paper. Datelined March 31, 1881 in Washington, D.C. 4 1/2" x 7." One page. Letter reads: "Dear Madam, It gives me much pleasure to comply with your request for my autograph by subscribing myself. Your obedient servant, J. C. Bancroft Davis." Davis wrote the woman's name and address (in Chicago) at the bottom of the letter. Letter, handwriting, and signature are very clean and intact. John Chandler Bancroft Davis (1822-1907), commonly known as Bancroft Davis, was an American lawyer, judge, diplomat, and politician. Davis held many political positions including Member of the New York State Assembly in 1869, U.S. Minister to Germany from 1874-1877, and Reporter of Decisions of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1883-1902. He was also appointed Assistant Secretary of State by President Ulysses S. Grant from 1869-1871 and 1873-1874.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good.
