A Very Good copy. A letter from Catherine Douglas to Mrs. George Douglas Ramsay, also known as Eliza Ramsay (nee Gales; 1815-1891). Eliza's husband, George Douglas Ramsay (1802-1882) was a Brigadier General of the United States Army and the 6th Chief Ordnance Officer of the U.S. Army. George was a career soldier who entered West Point at the young age of 12. He graduated from West Point in 1820 and retired in 1870. He is perhaps best-known for his service during the Civil War and for commanding the Washington Arsenal during the early days of the war. Catherine Douglas (?-1847) was likely a relative of George and Eliza. In her letter, Catherine writes to Eliza about a wide range of family news. She also writes, "I must congratulate you & Capt. Ramsay on Genl. Harrison being elected President of the United States, as it will give so much pleasure to both of you, as well as to all our Friends [... ] in every respect [he] will act very differently from Jackson & Van Buren.".
