Durrell, and only title for this publisher, Faber and Faber, and the only Sabine Baur illustrated title. The book's success brought about a change of publisher (to his friend, Rupert Hart-Davis) and the start of a memorable collaboration with illustrator Ralph Thompson.
Ralph Thompson (b. 3 June 1913, d. 3 May 2009) was a British artist and book illustrator, who specialized in pen and ink sketches of animal subjects. His most noteworthy works are his series of book illustrations for the famous naturalist and author Gerald Durrell in the period 1954 to 1964 when Durrell was associated with the publishing firm of Rupert Hart-Davis.In that decade, between themselves they produced a delightful and highly popular series of titles based on Durrell's idiosyncratic combination of travel,animal-collecting and natural history - some of the funniest and most charming titles of their kind ever written.
Mr Gerald Durrell has made animal collecting his career, and has given some diverting broadcasts from the B.B.C. on the subject. This, his first book,is an account of an expedition he made to the little- known territory of the British Cameroons,West Africa,to capture and bring alive to this country specimens of the unique fauna. He tells with charm and humour of his experiences in the great rain forests, and of his struggles in capturing such extraordinary and rare creatures as the Angwantibo, the Black-legged Mongoose, and that 'living fossil' the Potogamale.
Whether he describes hunting with a torch at night in the forest; the trials of hand- rearing baby animals; or the strange customs and beliefs of his native hunters,Mr. Durrell writes vividly and amusingly.
To the vast majority of readers who have never been in the jungle and whose experiences of animals is limited to visits to the Zoo,'THE OVERLOADED ARK.' will prove a refreshingly different kind of travel book and will give an unrivalled picture of West Africa with its unusual and entertaining inhabitants, human and animal.
