Texas' most beloved artist presents the fruits of his labors over half a century. Buck Schiwetz' eightieth birthday, August 24, 1978, coincides with the publication of this, his third major book. The drawings and paintings were selected by Schiwetz himself. Leon Hale, noted novelist and columnist for the Houston Post, has contributed a memorable essay based on his longtime friendship with the artist, and Schiwetz has provided a brief introduction to his pictures and a comment on each. Buck Schiwetz was born in 1898 in Cuero, Texas, and was graduated from Texas A&M in 1921 with a degree in architecture. Mostly self-taught, he studied for a time in New York and produced a series of drawings, represented here, of that city. Returning to Texas through the South, which also provided its share of subjects for sketches and paintings, he entered the advertising business in Houston. On commission from Humble Oil and Refining Company (now Exxon) and other companies Buck traveled throughout Louisiana, Mississippi, and the broad expanse of Texas, producing a wide variety of drawings and paintings which appeared in the Humble Way, the Texas Sketchbook, and other publications. It was through those publications that he first become widely known. Buck's travels also took him abroad to Mexico and Italy, and the colorful results of those trips are reflected in the pages of this book, too, but perhaps more important are the rich memories and the incredible variety of the Texas scene that are predominant in this collection. The past two years have been perhaps the most productive of Buck Schiwetz' life. Included in his recent paintings are a number of beautiful scenes from his boyhood in DeWitt County, to which he returned two years ago after several years as artist-in-residence at his alma mater, Texas A&M University. Also presented are a group of unusual interpretations of the Texas Gulf Coast, a region which has always brought forth his best, plus many other Texas scenes reproduced here for the first time. Thousands of Texans, and lovers of fine art everywhere, will want to place this book on their shelves next to Buck Schiwetz' Texas and The Schiwetz Legacy. It will give them an appreciation of the breadth of his art which they have never had before.. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hardcover.
