It's the very first timewe've had a booking made from the Antarctic!" Rex Blake, theyoung proprietor of the Motel of the Dozing Cat at Waitomolooked at me with frank interest.I laughed. "It wasn't me. Bill-Dr. Saunders, my fiance, arranged it for me. I have just arrived, but from somewhere alittle warmer-although at times not much !-England.""We have our chilly moments ourselves but they're overfor this year, we hope." He pointed across the courtyard."Both the units over there are empty; yours is the end one.I'll take you over."It might have been old Spain, or Mexico, instead of NewZealand, for the Motel of the Dozing Cat was built Spanishstyle round a huge paved courtyard, its single storey attachedflatlets forming three sides under a colonnaded veranda. Thefourth side of the square where we stood held the wideentrance-way, the office, the manager's flat, a restaurant, anda coffee bar which over-flowed out under gay umbrellas on thecourtyard side, on a quarter-circular terrace raised three lowsteps above the rest of the courtyard. The whole place was white, with dark blue and pale pinkdoors and awnings, pale pink geraniums cascading from darkblue pots, and had an air of infinite peace, possibly partlyconjured up by the Motel sign. It showed an utterly relaxedblack cat dozing in the sunshine in the traditional pose of thesleeping Mexican; merely a tail and furry paws protrudingfrom a Mexican hat drooped against a sunny wall. The whole place was well kept; it, 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall, Acceptable
