The oldest surviving photograph of a sea-going ship was taken towards the end of 1884 in Bristol.Since then,many amateur and professional photographers have captured images of ships in and around this famous port.'Images of MARITIME BRISTOL' is the first comprehensive selection of historic and modern photographs dedicated to this theme. Most of the photographs are from the Industrial & Maritime collections of Bristol City Museums & Art Gallery,a wide selection of whose fine images, supplemented from the archives of the regional newspaper,the Bristol Evening Post,builds into a superb evocation of the port's history over the 150 years that the camera has been with us. Early views capture the drama of sailing vessels,wrecked in the dangerous river that gave access to the old port.Ships under construction in local yards and going about their business in and around one of Britain's best loved ports illustrate the transition from sail to steam,timber to rivetted iron and more recently,to motorised vessels of welded steel. Work-a-day images from the Museum's Port of Bristol Authority Collection present a less romantic but realistic view of maritime Bristol in the changing times of the twentieth century.The heroic scale of the port facilities built to keep Bristol active as a major British port into the twenty-first century are depicted in some remarkable pictures by modern professional photographers.Paul Elken, having lived and worked in Bristol since 1969 he is recognised now as an acknowledged expert on the history of the city's industries,transport and its port and shipping in particular.He had long cherished an ambition to publish a wide-ranging selection of the photographs illustrating the port of Bristol from the extensive archives of the City Museum & Art Gallery (where he works as the Senior Curator of Humanities).This book realises that ambition. He was responsible in 1978 for establishing the acclaimed Industrial Museum and takes great pride in having learned to drive and fire its powerful steam locomotives 'Henbury' and 'Portbury'.Both engines were built in Bristol and worked the port's extensive railway network at Avonmouth Docks until preserved by the City Museum in the early 1960's.They are now used to give rides to the public on the Bristol Harbour Railway.
