Evelyn S Shuckburgh : P Ovidii Nasonis

Macmillan, 1910

1910 BOOK in red cloth hardcover, bumped to corners, faded to spine, inscription to inside of front cover, used appearance. PAGES tanned to edges but flat & tightly bound, underlining and notes to some passages. Book Extract; The object of this edition is to provide the higherclasses in Schools with a useful edition of Ovid'sEpistlea, which should contain some information asto their Author, as to the materials on which heworked, and the spirit in which he used them: andat the same time one in which an intelligent studyof the language should not be neglected, nor thehistory of the text passed entirely over. The book contains 13 of the 14 Epistles, thegenuineness of which has not been refuted by moderncriticism. At the same time no one can fail to bostruck with the inferiority of the Laodamia; and I mustrecord a strong suspicion that the Episode in Ep. 9,from v. 67 to 102, and that in Ep. 14, from v. 85 to108, bear marks of interpolation, or at any rate ofhaving been inserted after the completion of the rest.My plan has been to illustrate the Poet from hisown works; which is particularly proper in the caseof Ovid, who so often repeats his own words. I have, when quoting from his other works or from otherwriters, usually given the quotations in full, knowing, 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall, Acceptable
