Royal Doulton Character and Toby Jugs have long been of interest to collectors.Since the series began in 1934,it has not only appealed to increasing numbers of collectors but has also played a significant part in the revival of the Staffordshire Toby tradition. In response to the popular interest in the Character and Toby wares,Royal Doulton have decided to publish this authoritative reference work and collectors' handbook.Since the first
appearance of the range, these original and colourful studies of characters from literature, romance, legend,
history and theatre have been illustrated in the Doulton catalogues. However, never before have all the models ever produced have been illustrated in colour and full size in one book. The range was launched by 'John Barleycorn' and
'Old Charley',the imaginative creations of C.J. Noke,
Doulton's Art Director, and since then new Characters have been added nearly every year.At the same time, jugs have been gradually withdrawn to make way for the new arrivals,
designed by a number of modellers working in the studios at the Doulton factory in Nile Street,Burslem.
Full details of all the Character and Toby jugs are given, including their designer, dates of introduction and
withdrawal, the sizes made and full background information.
Known colour variants, prototypes and the range of wares derived from the Characters and Tobies are also fully
documented and illustrated in colour. There is also a well illustrated historical background which traces the history
of early face jugs and mugs from ancient Greece to the 19thC,and concentrates on the emergence of the familiar Toby Jug in Staffordshire during the midle of the 18thC.
This introduction places the Doulton wares in their historical context, and shows how they helped to revive and continue a vital part of the popular ceramic traditions of North Staffordshire.
The book has been written by Desmond Eyles,well-known as the author of a number of books on Royal Doulton.Formerly a Doulton employee,he has been able to draw on his own experiences to tell the story of the Character and Toby Wares. He has also been able to call upon the knowledge
amassed by collectors and dealers throughout the world and so has been able to produce a fascinating study of these very distinctive Doulton wares.
