Signature on beige card by Reuben Eaton Fenton in brown ink. No date, circa 1840s-1880s. 3 1/8" x 1 7/8." Card reads: "R. E. Fenton." Card and signature are very clean and intact. The back has an inscription in pencil from a former owner. Reuben Fenton (1819-1885) was an American governor and politician. He began his career as a merchant in the lumber industry but later entered the political field as a Democrat. He served in the 33rd U.S. Congress from March 1853-March 1855 as a Democrat and the 35th-38th U.S. Congresses from 1857-1865 as a Republican. Fenton was Governor of New York from 1865-1868 and also served as U.S. Senator from 1869-1875. Fenton was known as "The Soldiers' Friend" for returning Civil War veterans and also sought to remove school tuition charges, established several schools for training teachers, and signed the charter for Cornell University..
