The novel helped immediately establish Rosario Ferre as a leading contemporary voice in modern literature. Because she wrote the novel in English (whereas her previous works were in Spanish and were apparently erratically translated, some of them felicitous, others poor), it affords readers a more accurate and closer glimpse into her singular sensibility as a chronicler of personal histories against the inescapable background of impersonal History.
