Forsyth wrote 'Day of the Jackal' in 35 days working night and day.Telling friends he expected to make £5,000 they laughed saying he'd be lucky to make £500.UK publishers Collins, Cassell,W.H.Allen and Michael Joseph (who later sacked their reader for not spotting it) all turned the book down. Hutchinson's spotted the potential spending £3,000 on promotion,a fortune in publishing terms, and offered Forsyth a three book contract.And,of course,as the typescript had been read and approved by Andre Malraux,the former Minister of Culture to President de Gaulle,it helped a great deal! The first print run was increased up to an impressive 30,000 copies - still not enough as it turned out.Within months Corgi had paid £45,000 for paperback rights and then Bantam (US) paid three times as much for the same rights.Three years later it had sold 1.25 million copies in all editions in the UK and 6 million worldwide,and was translated into 11 languages. A man alienated from his own society decides to kill General de Gaulle.The reader follows along as he moves with ruthless professionalism from one stage to the next - the false passport, the evasion of pursuers, the construction of a rifle that will pass undetected through security checks - in his attempt to commit the perfect assassination.
