UK,12mo wraps,p/back 1st thus.VG+.[Originally and first published by Michael Joseph (UK),1962, in hardback.] Owner's blue ink name to top corner of front free endpaper of paperback. Slightly grubbed green+black illustrated upper wrap by Sheila Perry and b/w lettering; with negligible shelf-wear and creasing to edges and corners and miniscule rubbing to edges.A half-inch closed split/tear to foot of upper wrap's spine/backstrip edge.Book has a slight lean and inevitable reading creases to spine/backstrip. Top+fore-edges aged/toned - as usual/normal; contents bright, tight and clean with page- edge toning - no major dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners.UK,12mo wraps/paperback, 1st edn thus,5-237pp [paginated] includes 19 chapters; plus [unpaginated] title page and 2pp publisher's advert to rear. An acceptable paperback first edition/copy of a rare and much sought after and expensive Dick Francis title and early novel. This, the author's first novel, looked upon as a modern horse-racing classic.Highly sought after and an elusive 1st edition in hardback - only 2,500 copies,is also uncommon in it's first paperback appearance/edn. Eyes and field-glasses are on the first horses and the last fence. But it's misty; they look blurred, like ghost-riders.No one can see the fine wire stretched right above the fence - not even the leading jockey. So the dead cert's down. And the jockey's dead. Alan York, the second jockey over,is suspicious. And the nobblers know it.'Mind your own business,' they say,'or the same will happen to you.' But he doesn't.And it does.Nearly.The only way York can hope to identify the killers is to act natural but keep probing - but when there's more at stake than money and the odds are against you, acting natural doesn't come too easily. Dick Francis,a former Champion Jockey, tells a tensely exciting story with a clever plot, and gives,at the same time,a vivid picture of the dangers and rivalries of the racecourse.
