Original publisher's glossy black paper-covered boards backed with gilt cloth. Gilt lettering and gilt and multicolored coat of arms decoration on front cover. Decorative glassine flyleaf or tissue guard with spiderweb pattern after the Preface. 6" x 8 1/2." 203 pages, complete. Black-and-white illustrations, complete. Index in back. Pages and covers are clean and intact overall. Slight smoky smell. Pages are pristine and intact except for marginal small tears at the back endpaper and Pages 190 and 191, which may have resulted from the leaves being stuck together; text is unaffected. Covers have slightly bumped corners and slight edge wear. The paper-covered boards have a thin layer of plastic which is delaminating at the edges. A Very Good copy. A beautiful book containing an overview of different alcoholic drinks, advice on what to look for when purchasing said drinks, suggestions for what foods to pair them with, and a collection of alcoholic drink recipes and cooking recipes that incorporate or pair with wine and other alcoholic beverages, namely, a selection of entrees, soups, desserts, canapes, and snacks. Also included are full-page, black-and-white illustrated advertisements for a variety of alcoholic beverages. Marco's was a liquor retail store that had at least a couple locations in downtown Chicago. It was operated by Gerald F. Marco and Abe Marco. Four editions of this book were published in 1937, 1940, 1945, and 1949; this is the First Edition. Marco's is known to have published at least the First Edition which were targeted toward customers. Many copies of The How and When were personalized for these customers, as evidenced by the name in gilt lettering on the front cover of this copy, "Mrs. R. C. Wheeler." The following are some of the drinks discussed: Champagne, Burgundy, Claret, Medoc, Sauternes, Port, Sherry, Vermouth, Rum, Brandy, Liqueur, Whisky, and Gin. These are the types of drinks one can make in the recipe section: Cocktails, Highballs, Juleps, Hot Drinks, Punches, Cups, Smashes, Sours, Rickies, Cobblers, and Fizzes. Also, two brief sections on "Syrups and Bitters" and "Correct Bar Procedure." Excerpt from the Preface: "The purpose of this book is not to awe the reader with the stiff traditions ordinarily associated with the formal use of fine wines and rare liqueurs. Rather, it is intended as an authoritative reference guide, which in simple, uncomplicated form, may bring to you new and interesting facts concerning the origin, use and classification of the world's choicest vintages and spirits. ... On the following pages you will find 1,000 recipes for cocktails and other varieties of mixed drinks. There are 45 recipes for wines with food and 75 more recipes arranged for Canape and Cocktail Snack occasions. Fifty pages have been devoted to the use-service-storing-purchasing and growing of wines. ...
