Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional for a book of it's age and nature,i.e. an ephemeral paper item,and even internally,the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation.It is only the minor exterior's minor and minimal faults described,that prevent a higher grading. The Spanish Civil war conflict,framed by the authors as "the first social conflict in modern times in which the organized forces of reaction and the most powerful vested interests were forced into a position where they had no other resort than to take up arms against the legally established government.". The Spanish Civil War (1936–39) was the bloodiest conflict western Europe had experienced since the end of World War I in 1918.It was the breeding ground for mass atrocities.About 200,000 people died as the result of systematic killings,mob violence, torture,or other brutalities.The fighting displaced millions of Spaniards.Some 500,000 refugees fled in 1939 to France, where many of them would be interned in camps.15,000 Spanish Republicans ended up in Nazi concentration camps after 1940. The Spanish Civil War was a subject well-covered by the LEFT BOOK CLUB,its first title being 'SPAIN IN REVOLT' (December 1936) in the first year of the Club's launch,preceded Geoffrey Cox's 'DEFENCE of MADRID' (March,1937),Hewlett Johnson's 'Report of a Religious Delegation to Spain' (May,1937),Hubertus Friedrich Loewenstein's 'A Catholic in Republican Spain' (November, 1937),Arthur Koestler's 'SPANISH TESTAMENT' (December,1937) and Frank Jellinek's 'The Civil War in Spain' (June,1938). Gollancz rejected publication of George Orwell's 'Homage to Catalonia' as Orwell attempted to expose the propoganda dissemminated by the newspapers in Britain about the war.His attacks included both the right-wing press and the Daily Worker, a paper controlled by the Communist Party of Great Britian.Although one of the best books written about war,it only sold 1,500 copies in the Club's 12 year existence. The 'LEFT' BOOK CLUB was founded in May 1936,lasting until November,1948 and was a key left-wing institution of the late 1930s and into the late 1940s in Britain. It was set up by publisher Victor Gollancz, supporters include Stafford Cripps,the socialist campaigner John Stracey,and the Labour academic Harold Laski.It published a series of around 250 books over these twelve years,to revitalise and educate the British Left. The club's aim was to "help in the struggle for world peace and against fascism". Aiming to break even with 2,500 members,it had 40,000+ within the first year and by 1939 it was up to 57,000, however membership declined during the war years and the Club was defunct by Nov., 1948. The LBC was one of some of the first book clubs in the Britain and,as such, played an important role in the evolution of the country's book trade.Despite its pro-Communist line,the Club's socialist propaganda and education probably ultimately strengthened the Labour Party and contributed to its victory in the postwar election of 1945. The books and pamphlets with their distinctive covers—orange for paperback (1936–1938) and red for hardback (1938– 1948) editions—bore the legend "NOT FOR SALE TO THE PUBLIC" and sold for 2s 6d to members.Many titles were available for sale only in the LBC edition,with monthly 'choices' received by all members; there were also reprints of current socialist and 'progressive' classics for members to buy. The volumes covered history,science, reporting and fiction and a range of other subjects,but always from a left-leaning perspective. The advent of paper rationing at the onset of the war meant that the club was restricted to just one monthly title.To replace the book club's additional choices and augment the LBC selections,Gollancz launched the "Victory Books" series,a series of shorter monographs available to the general public.These included two of the biggest selling publications of the entire War period: Guilty Men (July 1940) by "Cato" (Michaael Foot,Frank Owen and Peter Howard) and Your MP.
