Includes a highly unflattering essay on John Betjeman, plus recollections of T.S.Eliot, Wyndham Lewis, Herbert Read, W.H.Auden, Louis MacNeice, Dylan Thomas, Henry Moore, John Piper and others. This copy is from the library of A.L.Rowse with much pencilled and highly critical marginalia in his hand, including the following note to the title page: "Mr. Grigson, Does it never strike you the more we read of you the less we like you. A nasty book by a nasty man. The nastiest I have ever encountered. I kept well away from him". Rowse, clearly unhappy with the unpleasant portrait Grigson paints of his friend Betjeman, has also inked an equally disparaging remark to the front panel on the dust wrapper (next to the photograph of Grigson, Rowse has noted "GG, unpleasant expression, sullen, obstinate, a bit brutal").
